I Bleached My Curly Hair
For years I’ve wanted to dye my hair bleach-blond (like,
white white white blond), but I have a lot of friends who are colourists and
they always discouraged me from it because it would ruin my curly hair. I don’t
have coils or anything, my hair is more S-shaped than curly, but still, after
years of hating it I’d finally started to embrace and love my texture, so I
listened to my friends and opted not to jeopardize its health and “look.”
But then last week I said ah, fuck it, and DID IT.
I wanted to write a blog post about my experience because I
know a lot of people are into the white-blond hair look right now but are
hesitant for the same reasons I was. But as a woman with curly-ish, short-ish hair, I can attest: yes, it damaged my hair, but not as much as I thought it would. And it was worth it because I really, really love the look!
Here's a photo of what my natural hair looked like before I dyed it. It was super healthy because I hadn't dyed it for years and don't use heated styling tools that much.
As you can see, the curl was definitely affected - it doesn't have quite the same structure as before, but I was happily surprised to see after my first post-dye shower that it was still there.
My stylist Beni (at Vanity Bar, @vanitybar.to) assured me that after a few weeks of deep-conditioning it, my curl would bounce back. I might do a follow-up post then to let you know if that actually happens or not, but I'm confident!
So, that's that. I just wanted the world to know what it's truly like to bleach your hair (and I mean really bleach it) when you have a curly or wavy texture because when I was doing my research, I couldn't find too much on the subject.
TL;DR: The verdict? If you really want to have white-blond hair, do it! Just try to wait until your hair is its healthiest.
And in case anyone wants some pre-dye tips, I learned a lot of them during my six-hour session with Beni!
- Don't wash your hair for at least a week before your appointment. This is because the bleach can be agonizing on your scalp, and the grease will help a lot.
- Budget a lot of time for this appointment, because it's going to take a while. Like I said, mine took six hours.
- Bring some wine. You'll want it when that bleach starts burning your head.
- Be ready to chuck out your current shampoo and conditioner, because you're going to have to commit to using purple stuff from now on. The brand Beni sold me smells amazing though (like pineapple and coconuts and LIFE), and I love it even more than my former favourite.
That's it, byeee!
